Quality control and periodic monitoring
We routinely assess the Wolbachia mosquitoes reared at our laboratory by measuring their insecticide resistance and body size, as well as the Wolbachia presence inside the mosquitoes. These assays ensure that the Wolbachia mosquitoes are fit for release and can survive in the Malaysian environment.
-
Insecticide Resistance Testing
Insecticide testing examines how the Wolbachia mosquitoes respond differently to common insecticides. These effects are usually assessed using laboratory bioassays, following standard WHO protocols.
-
Wing Measurement
Our Wolbachia mosquitoes are routinely monitored to ensure that their wingspan meets the minimum requirement for release (females: 2.60 mm; males: 2.00 mm), giving them a better chance for survival at the release sites.
-
Molecular Assay
Wolbachia presence inside the mosquitoes is determined using quantitative PCR with high resolution melt analysis (qPCR-HRM). This assay is used to monitor the Wolbachia mosquito population at release areas.
